Attractions: Museums

The High Country might be a fantastic wilderness and resort area that offers plenty of adventure vacation activities but, it is not without cultural attractions and neat museums to visit. Read on to find out about some of the fascinating places that you can explore and spend an afternoon browsing. All of these places are within a short drive from Beech Mountain Resort and our Beech Mountain NC Summer Rentals.

Turchin Center for Visual Arts

The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is the High Country’s largest art museum and gallery. Located on the campus of Appalachian State University, the Turchin Center presents various presentations, galleries and artists programs for artists, students and the greater community. A jewel of the downtown King Street community, the Turchin Center is a nice place to explore. Exhibits change regularly, and there is a nice sculpture garden on site as well.

Avery County History Museum

The Avery County History Museum, located in the Old Jail in Newland is a nice place to visit for history buffs. Featuring exhibits that depict the artifacts and historical happenings of the people living in the Toe River Valley, the Avery County museum is an importance heritage piece. Revolutionary War and Civil War relics can be found here.

Banner House Museum

In Banner Elk, the Banner House Museum, which is funded by the Greater Banner Elk Heritage Foundation, is a special cultural collection. Banner House Museum will be open from mid-June through mid-October, Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Located in the 19th century home of Samuel Henry Banner, one of the area’s first settlers, the museum is a living history museum that depicts what life was like for the original inhabitants of the area.

Museum of North Carolina Minerals

The National Park Mineral Museum is located in Spruce Pine, the gem stone mining capital of the world. Located off of the parkway at Gillespie Gap, the Museum of North Carolina Minerals features awesome mineral and gemstone exhibits. Created in 1956, the museum has since received a one million dollar facelift during a renovation project. Learn more about the fascinating Earth sciences at this cool museum.
