Attractions: Penland Art School

Most local folks and visiting guests refer to The Penland School of Crafts in Spruce Pine North Carolina, as just “Penland” and if you are lucky enough to find out about this special place you will inevitably want to make a stop here while you are on a Blue Ridge Mtn Vacation to Beech Mountain Resort. The Penland School is a remarkable place to meet and greet up and coming artists and buy hand crafted items that were made by art students.

Founded back in the early 1920’s by Lucy Morgan, the Penland School is a huge attraction for artists and fine craftisans. Students from around the world come to the Penland Craft School to take classes in the spring, summer, and fall in numerous disciplines including pottery, glassblowing, metalworking, weaving, dyeing, woodworking, painting, photography and printmaking. In March, the school holds a Community Day in which studios are open to the public and tours are offered. Visitors are welcome to walk through the grounds. Of special interest is the Craft House, one of the largest log structures in North Carolina. Tours of the campus are available Tuesdays at 10:30 am and Thursdays at 1:30 pm. Reservations are necessary; please call (828) 765-6211 if you are interested in a tour.
