Rock climbing has garnered a great deal of national attention in the last few decades. Adventure sportsmen and adrenaline junkies that love the outdoors and exercising in a natural setting spend a great deal of time mapping their locations and routs. There are numerous boulder settings in this region of Western North Carolina making for an endless supply of places to practice rock climbing and try your hand at real bouldering. We even feature spots that are perfect for ice climbing during certain times of the year. One of the most renowned rock climbing spots in the southeast is right at our backdoor. The Linville Gorge Wilderness Area is more than just an enormous stretch of protected lands along the Linville River. Here are some great spots:
For easy bouldering, Beacon Heights is a nice spot to go. Located at Milepost 305.2, follow along the Beacon Heights trail and look for trails leading up to the right to get to the boulders.
Blowing Rock Boulders
This is an extremely popular spot due to its notoriety. Take Hwy 221 our of Blowing Rock, towards Linville NC, and look for the Blue Ridge Parkway turnoff. At about 100 past the turnoff there is a parking area. You may park here, additional parking is available at Sandy Flats Church. Look for a trail at the end of the parking lot and follow the most heavily used pathway, this trail has many forks. The total hike takes about 10 minutes. The boulders are usually filled with climbers.
Climbing is allowed here during periods when the Blue Ridge Parkway is closed due to the winter weather conditions. Ice climbing is the only allowed type of climbing. Ice forms pretty quickly here when cold weather hits. Drive north on the Blue Ridge Parkway from Boone.
Located off of the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 306.6, there are tons of great bouldering spots at Grandmother Mountain. You’ll find endless spots to climb.
